4.5. Model Operational Notes From a user’s perspective, the key to operation of the Space Segment Model is the interface provided by the Input worksheet. To illustrate some of the procedures employed in using the model, a portion of this Input worksheet is included as an example in Figure 4-18. Note that the worksheet is partitioned horizontally into two major sections. The top section is used for inputs associated with the solar power satellite, and enables the user to specify architecture and technology choices as well as values for specific parameters. The bottom section is similarly used for relay satellites, when they are part of the SSP architecture. In both sections, user access is limited to the rows of yellow (shaded in the figure) cell areas identified as Non-Default Choices. Each column presents a different model input choice or parameter available to the user, along with a list of available options or recommended values for that input. For text inputs, the user must type his choice exactly as indicated in the option list, or alternatively drag the option from the list to the input cell and use the Copy Values command. If the user does not provide an input for a particular parameter, Le., the yellow input cell is left empty, the model automatically reverts to the default value associated with the selected concept. The full set of input values used by the model for any given run is contained in the row(s) labeled Default. A simplified end-to-end procedure for running specific case studies with the SSM model can be briefly summarized in the sequence of steps that follow: 1. Open the SSM workbook and select the Summary worksheet. 2. Enter the names of up to 25 cities or towns and both their latitude and longitude in the table entitled Ground Sites, or copy this information from the database of selected sites grouped by market segment in the worksheets labeled Mega-City, City, Mega-Town, Town, and Remote. 3. Select the Input worksheet. 4. In the yellow input cell for the column labeled Concept, copy (using the Copy Values command) the name of the selected Solar Power Collection Satellite concept from among the listed choices. 5. If the SunTower+- concept is selected in Step 4, the name of a relay option must also be selected and copied into the corresponding input cell in the Relay Satellite portion of the Input worksheet. 6. Enter desired parameter values and options for the Power Satellite, Relay Satellite (if used) and overall system architecture into the appropriate input cells. Note that selection of the system concept name(s) in the preceding step(s) sets default values for all needed inputs. Clearing an input cell accepts the default value; while entering data overrides the default. 7. After all input data is entered, return to the Summary sheet and recalculate twice. 8. The Summary worksheet provides results of the case just run as well as key input data that characterizes the case.
