GEO Millimeter Wave: Ground Segment The ground segment is composed of the ground receiver and ground Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) elements. The ground receiving rectenna is approximately 1 km in diameter and generates 50 MWe of electrical power. No significant ground energy storage capability is envisioned. Provisions must also be made for mission operations control This function would not necessarily be colocated with the receiving facility. As the system is intended to operate largely autonomously, operations for the first system might be “time-shared” with an existing ground control facility. As multiple space and ground segments are emplaced, a dedicated central control facility may be desirable. Figure 3-12 The GEO/Miliimeter Wave Concept Architectural Context Markets and Commercial Power Utility Interface The target market for this concept is remote small towns or developing areas. The ideal customer market would He at a moderate to low latitude, have a relatively arid climate at perhaps high elevation, and would have at least a few hundred acres of affordable, relatively flat land for erection of the 1 km diameter rectenna. The focus on customer markets in or near “high and dry” locations is made to exploit
