SPACE SOLAR POWER & EXPLORATION WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION FROM MARS’ ORBIT * The baseline Design Reference Mission (DRM) provides for the development and use of a 300 kW-class Mars surface-specific nuclear reactor power system for planetary surface power - Power = 160 kW continuous output (approximately) - Mass = 12.5 MT • The use of high-power solar electric propulsion systems (SEPS) for Earth-Mars transportation also opens the potential to use wireless power transmission (WPT) from Mars orbit to enable lower cost planetary surface operations - Power systems will be common with SEPS solar power for propulsion - Wireless power transmitters • Specific trade studies would be needed to determine optimal scenarios for use of this strategy... • However, it appears that both the development costs and total mass delivered to the surface could be reduced significantly - Surface Mass (Nuclear Reactor Power Systems) = 3 x 12.5 MT = 37.5 MT • to produce 160 kW with full redundancy, plus an additional power reactor for later missions) - Surface Mass (WPT Power Systems) = 3 x'1 MT = 3 MT (approximately) • to produce 100-1600 kW with required redundancy « specific power levels and service dependant on detailed trades and design decisions SPACE SOLAR POWER & EXPLORATION WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION FROM MARS’ ORBIT
