2.4.1. Define Segments Regions are analyzed in terms of different types of market. The types of market used in this analysis were: mega-city, city, mega-town, town, and remote locations. Each type of market was assumed to demand different quantities of energy. These markets and the associated demand are summarized in Table 2-3. Market types were associated with either developing countries or developed countries, or with both. Specific markets around the world were selected to represent each of the market types, using an analysis of regions of the world. Regions of the world were identified based on their economic status and geographic location. Economic regions were based on those used by the World Bank and the United Nations. They are shown in Table 2-4. Countries within these regions and sub-regions were further characterized based on their per capita income. Differences in developing countries (low per capita income, little energy infrastructure) and developed countries (high per capita income, extensive energy infrastructure) are extremely important in analyzing future energy markets. 2.4.2. Final Sites Chosen The orbital path of a space solar power satellite, and the regions that can as a consequence be served by that satellite, are determined by identifying high population markets in each major region of the world and defining an orbital path that provides access to as many of these markets as possible. The types of markets (e.g., mega-city versus town) identified for a particular space solar power system depend on the performance characteristics of the satellites in the system. The complete list of sites used in this analysis is provided in Table 2-5. The sites were chosen based on the following criteria: • Mega-City: Category consists of cities and metropolitan areas in the world with a population of 10 million or more. • City: Category consists of cities selected based on the highest population city within each region (list) and per-capita GDP income classification (upper, middle, low). Excludes mega-cities. • Mega-Town: Category consists of population centers in countries with the hightest urbanization rate in each region, for low and middle income countries. The country list is further limited to countries projected to have populations of 50 million or more by 2025. Sites were also selected to achieve geographical dispersion. • Town: Category consists of countries with the hightest urbanization rate in each region, for low and middle income countries. Towns were selected to reflect midpoint of country. • Remote (Isolated Use): Category consists of selected remote areas. Table 2-4 Market Regions & Sub-Regions
