Combined methods of insuring androgyny are possible which permit docking of two types of docking device: peripheral and “rod and cone” devices, and two docking mechanisms of both types may be installed on the docking frame. The androgynous docking device is planned so that all docking and undocking operations are done by one active docking assembly, which may dock with the same assembly in a passive state, with a compatible fully passive assembly, or an assembly containing individual mechanisms. 2.5. Basic Groups of Mechanisms and Elements of the Docking Device 2.5.1. Mechanisms of the Docking Frame The principal schemes of the mechanisms of the docking frame, as a rule, depend only slightly on which type of docking device is used. The following basic mechanisms and elements are installed on the frame: locks, guides for final equalization, joint seals (for hermetic constructions), push rods for undocking, sensors (alignment of joint, compression, sealing, monitoring of undocking, etc.). The most complex and critical mechanism is the system of locks of the docking frame, which insures coupling and rigid connection of the joint. Failures of the locks are in categories I and TT of failure criticality. Three basic types of locks are possible: 1) with individual drives (Apollo); 2) with single drives (Soyuz- Salyut, APDA); 3) with group drives. Tn the construction of the second and third types of locks and drives are connected by a joint, for example, a closed cable. The first type of lock has a greater mass, a greater number of active elements operating on the closing of the joint and undocking; it is less likely several of the locks will spontaneously open than for locks with a single drive. Locks with a group drive have advantages over locks of the first and second groups. For undocking the locks usually use the main drive, which may be backed up by an additional drive or a pyrotechnic device. For the locks of the docking frame to work correctly one must eliminate displacements of the frames in the radial direction; roll equalization is not a necessary condition (for example, in the Apollo docking device). Final equalization is usually done with guide rods and sockets. Frequently, two pairs of guide rods and sockets are used for androgynous structures. To compensate for temperature
