Figure 1.21. Means or separating the docking mechanism at different stages of the Apollo flight, a. jettison the frame of the emergency rescue system; b. emergency jettison of frame of emergency rescue system; c. separation of docking frame with docking mechanism; d. schematic of attachment of docking frame; 1. frame of emergency rescue system with cowl; 2. rod with shear pin; 3. docking mechanism with docking frame; 4. flange of command module; 5. aluminum ring; 6. ablation shield; 7. soft insulation; 8. docking frame; 9. elongated charge. When the head impacts with the receiving cone the energy is absorbed by settling of the rod. When the head enters the vertex of the cone three latches are activated which are fixed in a locked position by built-in mechanical triggers. After damping of the relative oscillations, a command from the astronaut's control panel pressurized the cylinder of the pneumatic drive and coupled the spacecraft. Equalization of pitch and yaw was done by three limiting levers. In the final part of coupling, the clamps of the raised locks of the docking frame fell behind the flange of the lunar module, automatically activating them. In this way the frames were coupled, compressing the seal and creating a preliminary waisting.
