Owing to the large receiving antenna (approximately 100 km2) there will be no possibility to feed in near the load centres. However, if one thinks of solutions in distant or offshore areas then, in general, larger distances to the consumption centres have to be bridged. For ensuring the supply, even with sudden loss of the photovoltaic power output due to disturbances, reinforcement measures would have to be taken for the high voltage interconnected grid. If one wants to incorporate a capacity of 5000 MW into the existing 380 kV high voltage transmission system according to today’s technology (maximum 2 x 800 MW/line path) after all four line paths would be required. Besides the enormous investment costs the political acceptance of such projects should be taken into account. SUMMARY AND PROSPECTS If one compares the terrestrial decentral with the extraterrestrial central power generation from the energy-economical point of view this comparison clearly is in favour of the SPS concept.
