In the presence of dissipation Eq. 17, the phase diagram cannot contain cycles so that the rest points corresponding to the stable equilibrium states turn into focal points when dissipation is small. In this case, the system is no longer conservative. The phase diagram for such a system is depicted in Fig. 5. For any initial state after a finite number of rotations, the satellite will commence a damped oscillation, and finally approached a stable equilibrium position in which the maximum instantaneous cosine loss in incident solar radiation becomes 100%. It is therefore concluded that an active or power-assisted control system is needed to cope with the problem of energy dissipation.
