NEWS ITEM In a recent article in Astronautics and Aeronautics (July/August, 1980), William E. Gordon and Lewis M. Duncan report that the SPS beam power density ionospheric limit of 23 mW/cm2 could safely be doubled to 40 or 50 mW/cm2 while tests continue. Based on the ionospheric test data to date they see no reason to restrict systems studies to the 23 mW/cm2 level. They argue that doubling the ionospheric limit “. . . will have an important effect on SPS system hardware and cost. It needs the engineering attention of the systems people.” News
