Space Solar Power Review Vol 1 Num 4 1980

The cost of the DOE/NASA study of the Satellite Power System has been just under $20 million. The report of the SPS Project Division to the Department of Energy is scheduled for October. It should be available to the public at the end of the year or the beginning of 1981. Despite the most careful investigation of the concept, no insurmountable problems have as yet been uncovered. There appear to be no “show stoppers.” Reports on the work of the Satellite Power System Project Office may be obtained from Frederick A. Koomanoff, Director, Satellite Power System Project Office, U.S. Department of Energy, Washington DC, 20545, or from his deputy, Michael Riches, at the same address. The telephone number is (301) 395-3281. The second study is the result of the Department of Energy asking the National Research Council to review the DOE/NASA Assessment Program to help insure that all significant questions are addressed. At the same time, the National Science Foundation asked NRC to study the feasibility of transmitting solar energy to earth by using satellites manufactured from lunar and asteroidal materials. These two interests have been combined into one study. NRC’s Environmental Studies Board appointed the following Committee on Satellite Power Systems: Dr. Dale R. Corson, Chairman President Emeritus Cornell University 615 Clark Hall Ithaca, New York 14853 607-256-4320 Dr. Norman M.
