GLASER President SUNSAT Energy Council In March, 1980, the SUNSAT Energy Council will enter its third year of service. In pursuit of its objectives, which are spelled out in the Charter and By-Laws, it enjoys the support of a committed and growing membership, a sound financial position, and increasing recognition for its efforts to foster the exploration of the SPS as a potentially technically feasible, economically viable, and environmentally benign option. The Board of Directors met three times during 1979: February 6: Cosmos Club, Washington, D.C. July 10: O’Hare Hilton, Chicago, Ill. November 15: Cosmos Club, Washington, D.C. At those meetings plans were made for increasing the membership and for the publication of the Space Solar Power Review by Pergamon Press. Objectives were clarified, membership dues revised, a Newsletter supported, and long-term plans, including the hiring of an Executive Secretary, discussed. Plans were also laid for holding the Los Angeles meeting, and for joint sponsorship with the Centre d’ Etudes et de Recherches de Toulouse of an International Conference on Solar Power Satellites in Toulouse, France, June 25-27, 1980. The 1979 Annual Meeting, which was scheduled for last May 24, was postponed due to the gasoline shortage. Professor John Freeman, Rice University, Editor of the Journal of the SUNSAT Energy Council, Space Solar Power Review and Pergamon Press, Elmsford, N.Y., publisher, expect the first issue of the Journal to be in the hands of the membership in March. In December, the Executive Secretary, Frederick H. Osborn, Jr., was appointed by the Board. A new administrative office has been opened in Cold Spring, New York. SUNSAT members participated in a number of national and international meetings on space-related subjects, some of which are listed in the February issue of the Council’s Space Solar Power Bulletin. Members have testified at Congressional hearings and participated in conferences. Of particular importance was a meeting of the SUNSAT Energy Council members with United Nations representatives at the University Club in New York on March 2, 1979, to discuss international implications of the SPS. Application for membership of the Council in the United Nations as a nongovernmental organization is under way in keeping with the international outlook of the Council and its members.
