The 20-/nm synthetic sapphire (A12O3) substrate, used in an inverse orientation, also acts as the cell cover. The reflectors are composed of 12.5-^tm aluminized kapton. Current GaAs solar cells use GaAs substrates. A12O3 was substituted to reduce significantly the demand for Ga (which would have been prohibitive) and to reduce cell material and fabrication cost. Based on recent data, this cell should be self-annealing to space radiation at its normal operating temperature.
