Fig. 4. SPS reference system satellites. The purpose of the reference system is to provide DOE with a specific and consistent set of data on the SPS for purposes of evaluation. Following preliminary definition of this concept, trade studies were conducted to further define the characteristics of the system. The trade studies resulted in the GaAs photovoltaic concept shown in Fig. 5 with the characteristics shown in Table 1. This concept has the antenna mounted in the center rather than on one end as previously shown for the Reference configuration. The end-mounted antenna concept is considered to be an acceptable approach, but the mass is about 2 million kg greater, primarily because of power distribution penalties. The power output at the utility interface on the ground is 5 GW. Mass properties for this concept are summarized in Table 2. The mass is approximately evenly divided between the solar array and the microwave antenna. The following paragraphs summarize the characteristics of the majo*' satellite Fig. 5.
