The absolute phases of the harmonics generated by the amplitrons and klystrons differ from tube to tube even when the fundamental frequencies are locked. The net effect is that the antenna pattern is determined by the effective area that each tube has in the transmitting antenna. This is especially true when considering a very large number of sources. e. The effective gain of the transmitting antenna at the harmonic frequencies.
